Hey everyone.
It’s back to class week and the first week is usually the one with students running around everywhere.
This is the week when the bookstore is packed and the line up ends up wrapped around the bookstore building. For those students that bought their books early, I give you mad props for taking the smarter route. Another option which I will be using myself this week is the “online reservation” option. I had a classmate bring up the fact that you can purchase the books online at the BCIT bookstore website. And, then they reserve a copy and put it aside, which you can then pick up 2-4 days later. And, the best part is that you don’t have to stand in the same long line up. There is actually a separate line up for those that order for in store pick-up. But, I’ll be able to post more about the processes later this week.
The first week is always the odd one, because a lot of times you don’t know anyone in the class. You have to run around trying to find the correct classrooms sifting through all of the random BCIT buildings. The one downside to BCIT is that there are tons of smaller buildings rather than just a bunch of larger ones. So it’s a lot easier to get lost or stuck finding a certain particular building.
The best part at BCIT is that a lot of students end up having classes together. In fact, I think this semester every class has quite a few people I know from the previous semester. And, I never have found that at any other major institute in British Columbia. Usually, there are always brand new faces and no one knows or interacts with others at all. But, I find with BCIT that isn’t really the case for both full-time and part time students. I believe full time students usually have a group that they will always have all their classes with in the semester. The same can be said for the Forensics program, as many classes are only offered once a year. Therefore, a lot of times you will see the same people again the following semester. And, this leads to collaborations, which I find others schools don’t do to well at all. I think the best learning outcome comes from the fact that you work with others, and you share ideas, concepts and knowledge with each other.
I haven’t been able to visit or take part in any of the student union events. I know the BCIT student association always has very good and useful resources for all students. They offer things such as agenda/planners, and other student resources that are available at the start of the semester. I find there are LOTS of resources for students, which many of us don’t know about or use at all. So, this is a good chance for all students to learn more about what the student association and BCIT offers to its students. I’ll try to post pictures and more information next week, when I visit the student association building.
Well that’s all for this week, as I’m still trying to settle in from holiday mode to school mode.
Hope everyone has a great start to their winter semester at BCIT.
